A Global Trend: Newsrooms Adopt Artificial Intelligence as a Supportive Tool Without Replacing Journalists

Newsrooms around the world are experiencing a significant shift in the way journalistic content is produced, as media organizations increasingly rely on artificial intelligence tools to support editorial processes without replacing human journalists. This transformation comes amid a global race to develop more efficient methods for gathering, verifying, and disseminating information while maintaining the professional and ethical standards that underpin the journalism field.

Recent reports issued by international media freedom organizations indicate that more than 70% of major media outlets now use some form of AI in their daily operations—whether for content archiving, headline generation, or analyzing large datasets related to audience behavior. Nevertheless, these organizations continue to emphasize that journalists remain at the core of editorial decision-making, as they possess the ability to interpret context, assess news value, and connect events in meaningful ways.

At the same time, this shift has sparked wide debate among journalists, particularly regarding its impact on the future of employment in the media sector. While some fear that technological advancements will reduce opportunities for new journalists, others believe that AI will create new specialties related to data analysis and oversight of intelligent systems—skills that are increasingly incorporated into modern journalism training programs.

Professional associations also warn that unregulated reliance on AI may lead to the spread of inaccurate information if outputs are not reviewed by humans, especially in breaking or sensitive news. These associations stress the importance of establishing clear “codes of conduct” that define how AI can be used responsibly without compromising professionalism or the credibility of journalists.

Most analyses agree that the coming years will witness a more balanced relationship between technology and journalism, where AI tools serve as complementary assets rather than replacements. This balance is expected to help preserve journalism’s societal role as a trusted source of information and a vital mechanism for holding power accountable.
